August 13- August 17 Week 23/72
taking turns balancing on the swaying heads
of Echinacea, Coreopsis and globe thistle
summer pairings of house sparrows and goldfinches
search for seed nestled among the fading flowers
then begin forming into small working groups flushing
insects from the canopy of the weeping cherry
the same cool, dry air that has prompted
this collaboration and will soon send
them on their way has reminded me
that it is time to gather the sage, dill,
marjoram, oregano and bits of tender tarragon
from the garden before their vigor flies away
on the wings of migrating birds
