strong winds have pulled
even the most reluctant of leaves
from their branches sending them
aloft until gravity takes hold
creating thick carpets of faded foliage
maple, oak and linden cloaked in
lush browns and hints of grey
spread all across the yard except
where punctuated by circular mosaics of
vibrantly colored area rugs lying beneath
the burning bush, forsythia and Japanese maples
