tug of war

October 3 - October 7 Week 33/72

swamp milkweeds seemingly sense

the loosening grip of the sun's warmth

opening their pods, sending seeds aloft

on a building wind that is pulling the weather

further from summer as chlorophyll gives way

to a raging storm of yellows, oranges and reds

splashed with abandon on the nearby hills

and garden tools cleaned, oiled and hung with care

bang against the wall of the shed protesting

their retirement as a strong gust, laden with leaves

rounds the corner, darkening the sky with heavy clouds

slashing rain and promises of a cold night to come
