a strong and acrid calling card lingers
heavy in the air courtesy of an exploring
skunk newly emerged from its warm winter den
indifferent to the oppressive odor, tiny wrens sing
big notes back and forth across a thinning
layer of snow patterned with tree shadows
lengthening and lingering a little longer each day
reaching towards the promise of spring
